Winter's Tale, The (1981)
Barbican / London

Producer: Ronald Eyre (Director)
Playwright: Shakespeare
Character: Leontes

Sir Alec Guiness in his autobiography "A Positively Final Appearance" writes about The Winter's Tale: "Now I come to remember it....in Ronald Eyre's production at the Barbican....In that same production, Leontes was played by Patrick Stewart, easily the finest performance of the part I have ever seen. There was a man who had actually stepped in to the jaws of hell of jealousy. The moment the first evil crossed his mind, his pale face was suffused with the weak sickly smile I have sometimes seen used by the jealous to disguise, as they hope, their illness."
