The Cherry Orchard (1965)
Theatre Royal Bristol / Bristol, England

Playwright: Anton Tchekhov, English version by Sir John Gielgud
Cast: Eithne Dunne, Terrence Hardiman, David Burke, Jane Lapotaire, Frank Middlemass, Michael Deacon, Dudley Jones
Character: Lopahin, a merchant

Directed by Christopher Denys
When The Cherry Orchard was first produced in Moscow by Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko, Tchehov criticised their interpretation as one which was too tragic. The play, he insisted, was a comedy -- almost a farce.
