The Life of Galileo (1965) Theatre Royal / Bristol, England
Producer: The Bristol Old Vic Company Playwright: Bertolt Brecht Cast: Kevin O'Connon, Gawn Granger, Desmond Stokes, Lynne Ashcroft, Peter French Character: Galileo Galilei
Directed by Christopher Denys
The action takes place in Venice, Florence and Rome between the years 1609 and 1640. The play demonstrates how the explosive exuberance and naive enthusiasm of the scientist lead him into censureship and the shadow of the stake.
He (Galileo) is forced to turn a subservient face to his persecutors so that he may live to complete some of his greatest work.
Translated by Desmond Vesey.
