National Theatre - The Olivier / London
Producer: National Theatre
Playwright: Peter Shaffer
Cast: Alan Bates, Richard Warner, Leigh Lawson, Anthony Stewart Head, Wendy Morgan
Character: David, King of Judah and Israel
Set in the court of King David, the play is an ethical drama in which ancient superstition and beliefs influence the judgement and actions of court members and royal descendants.
From a review by Benedict Nightingale in New Statesmen:
"Shaffer's tale and Peter Hall's production have their moments all right. Whenever Leigh Lawson's Amnon is onstage... the action comes to something that might without exaggeration be called life. So it does when Patrick Stewart's peppy David is charismaticly holding court."
The play is inspired by the novel, The Tape of Tamar by Dan Jacobson, and The Book of Samuel
Directed by Peter Hall
